<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">The problem of pension financing in the Republic of Serbia has been acute since the 1980s. The deficit of funds for pension payment in the pay as you go public  pension system is the result of an inadequate pension policy in the past, that is,  the  incompatibility  of  the pension  system  design  with  the  changes  in  the  environment. Demographic trends have the most significant and far‐reaching  impact on the financial sustainability of the pay as you go public pension systems in the large number of European countries, as well as in the Republic of Serbia. The aim of this paper is to identify the impact of demographic trends and other determinants on the financial sustainability of the pay as you go public pension system of the Republic of Serbia. The analysis was carried out by the means of the regression analysis on the series of yearly data for the period 1995-2015.  The obtained results confirm that demographic trends have significant impact on the  financial sustainability of the pay as you go public pension system in the Republic  of Serbia, since the significant influence of the average population age on the  financial sustainability of this pension system is identified. Besides that, other  important determinants of financial sustainability of this pension system are  determined – the average insurance period of the old‐age pension beneficiaries  and the average pension. Practical implications of these results are large, since  they  enable  the  pension  policy  designers  to  improve  long‐term  financial  sustainability of the pay as you go public pension system of the Republic of Serbia. </dim:field>
