<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">Financial sector has multiple importance for both economic development of a country and
its competitiveness. The aim of this paper is to present the influence of the financial crisis on
the Serbian banking system, and the availability of loans to the enterprises. Furthermore, the
problems related to the enterprises’ financing will be presented as well, and the possibilities of
hedging. Unfortunately, the indicators regarding the quality of the banking system acquired
from Global Competitiveness Report reveal the fact that Serbia is among the worst ranked
countries within the region. Furthermore, the level of non performing loans (NPL) has reached
the level of 21.1%, where corporate loans are the most dominant ones, indicating poor
state of the Serbian economy. Finally, creating a stable financial system within the county will
contribute to the companies’ goals, and for the country itself means better positioning on the
global competitiveness scale. However, the companies itself have to be active in this process
as well, diversifying their sources of financing.</dim:field>
