Stevanović Turbulent political and social changes in many European countries in the second half of the 19th century influenced the pursuance of new ways of resisting Germanization among the Czech bourgeois. In their wish to strengthen national consciousness in the struggle for national liberation, on the initiative of the Czech intellectual Miroslav Tyrš in 1862, “The Gymnastic association of Prague” was founded. Two years later, the association changed its name into “Soko”, by which the whole system of physical training - focused on physical and health education, as well as cultural and national revival and unity of the nation, got their name. Shortly after that, the Sokol associations began to be founded in all South Slavic peoples who were under the foreign rule those days. Laza Popović, a physician, writer and social worker, was among the most important founders of the Sokol movement of the Serbian people under the Austro-Hungarian rule. Before and during the Balkan wars and the “Great War”, doctor Popović was exposed to many dangers in the maelstrom of circumstances because of his social and sports engagement, national feelings and patriotism. His commitment to the idea of the Sokol movement had a high price.
