Vakanjac V. Ristić Vakanjac R. Kondžulović Several localities in southeast Mongolia, Dornogovi Province (Aimag), are discussed in the paper. The general area is known for its pronounced tectonic activity, numerous uranium anomalies and a variety of mineral resources. No substantial geological exploration had been undertaken in Mongolia before the year 1921. Certain local alluvial deposits of gold and semi-precious stones had been exploited using primitive technologies. Institutions were set up after the establishment of a Soviet socialistic system (1919-1921, which lasted until 1991) at which time comprehensive geological exploration of Mongolia (including the creation of a topographic database) was initiated. Today, abundant geological documentation is available with regard to both mapping and exploration of mineral resources (as well as other areas of geology, e.g. geophysical surveys), which is moreor- less accessible to the public through MRAM (the Mineral Resources Authority of Mongolia). Dornogovi is situated within the Central Mongolian structural system and includes a part of the western section of the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous Mongol-Argun volcanic belt. The bedrock is comprised of Precambrian and Paleozoic metasediments, Precambrian to Mesozoic granites and alkaline-to-acidic Paleozoic to Mesozoic volcanic complexes. Regional faulting has created basins and diverse geomorphological features. Structurally, Dornogovi’s geology comprises arched uplifts made up of Precambrian to Late Mesozoic rocks, with basins between them filled with unconsolidated Early Cretaceous sediments and brown coal interbeds (TROITSKI et al. 1981; VAKANJAC, 2009). Upper Cretaceous-Paleogene alluvial sediments overlie older Paleosoic and Mesosoic strata. The directions of major faults are E-W, NW-SE and NESW. In Dornogovi, uranium exploration has been virtually ongoing since the early 1950s. Old Soviet trenches still exist in many places.
