                    <dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">Purpose –The main purpose of this study was to identify key factors influencing the creation and implementation of knowledge management programme. We tried to establish the impact of corporate culture, human resource management, leadership, information technology, and control on the success of knowledge management. 
Design/methodology/approach – Based on the review of contemporary literature and research of well-known consultancy companies, the authors identified five key factors that influence the implementation of knowledge management. Their influence was further investigated through a survey conducted among top and middle managers.

Findings – The results have shown that corporate culture, human resource management, leadership, information technology, and control are the key factors influencing the effectiveness of knowledge management programmes.

Research limitations / implications – The research results are limited by the nature of the organizations surveyed, the level of knowledge management initiatives in these organizations, as well as geographical scope of the research. 
Originality/value – This study seeks to contribute to the literature on knowledge management in two ways. First, we analysed theoretical constructs from the literature on knowledge management in general, and identified five key factors that influence the implementation of knowledge management. Second, we explored the application of knowledge management programmes in transitional economy.
