                    <dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">From a drinking water supply perspective, the water quality of karst aquifers is among the highest, often requiring only disinfection prior to use. However, karst groundwater is exposed to certain pressures. During dry periods there is generally a water deficit, and during rainy periods there are sudden changes in both water quality and quantity. Watershed response to rainfall is often rapid and variations in quality and quantity parameters (discharge, water table, turbidity, total microbial count, suspended sediment, etc.) are erratic. This necessitates monitoring of discharge and problematic parameters of karst groundwater quality, but also of the rainfall regime in the area of interest. If suficiently long monitoring time-series are available, it is possible to perform autocorrelation and crosscorrelation analyses to gain insight into the causal relationships between precipitation and qualitative/quantitative parameters. In addition, suitable regression models (autoregression, cross-regression and autocross-regression) can be applied to simulate a quality parameter that can later be used for short-term predictions. The results presented in this paper refer to a case study of the karst spring “Surdup”, which is used as a water source for the water supply system of the City of Bor in eastern Serbia.</dim:field>
