Вјетров The aim of this paper is the analysis of economic criteria necessary to be fulfilled by a country within EU integration process, with special focus on creating stable and efficient banking system through the harmonization of regulation in Serbia with the regulation with− in EU. Serbia has already achieved the level of the EU harmonization of the national legi− slation referring to Law on banks, implementation of Basel I and Basel II standards. However, further effort would be implementation of Basel III framework, created with the aim to strengthen the banks’ resistance to various economic and financial shocks. Further− more, this paper analyzes the influence of implemented regulation to the banking sector performance (presented by the level of capital, assets, profitability indicators and loans le− vel etc.). The research conveyed shows that implemented legislative framework influenced both the capital level (545 billion RSD in the end of 2011, 591 billion RSD in the end of 2012 and at the end of the third quartal of 2013 it amounts 605 billion RSD), and capital adequacy level beyond proposed level by Basel framework (19.87% in Serbia, 8−12% with− in EU). Furthermore, the analysis reveals that the growing numbers of banks are investing in IT and staff training with the aim of efficient implementation of Basel standards and bet− ter risk management.
