                    <dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">The increasing use of IP technology and of IP-based products and devices, such as the softswitch, brings a continuing downward pressure on traditional telephony.  Interconnection of IP equipment from different manufacturers, however, is not straightforward, and this slows down deployment and creates additional costs.  Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is at the centre of this issue.  Its very flexibility and variety of extensions that gives it such potential leads to problems in interconnection of devices of different manufacturers – inter-vendor working.  The solution to this problem is, in part, achieved by use of Session Border Controller (SBC) devices.  However, SBC operation is not fully automated and it relies upon extensive configuration and the human factor.  Staff training, timeliness and quality of decisions significantly influence the commercial viability of SBC-based Voice over IP (VoIP) networks.  A new software application that enables automatic configuration of SBC devices is required in order to address these limitations and significantly reduce the costs.</dim:field>
