                    <dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">Tourism  can  be  very  significant  for  the  economic  growth  and  a  weighty  source  of  income  for  the  state  as  well  as  for  the  whole  economy  and  the  population. The main goal of this research is to examine the frequency and the main motives of travel of Serbian tourists when it comes to the different type of tourism  and  the  preference  of  domestic  and  foreign  destinations.  Gender  and  age differences in travel motives were also found. The sample consisted of 250 respondents  of  different  gender  and  level  of  education  from  Serbia.  The  data  were  processed  with  the  SPSS  program.  In  addition  to  descriptive  statistical  measures,  the  Mann-Whitney  U  test  and  Kruskal-Wallis  test  were  also  been  used.  The  results  show  that  in  general  tourists  from  Serbia  choose  different  types  of  tourism.  The  most  popular  is  by  far  coastal  tourism,  and  when  domestic  destinations  are  taken  into  account,  the  spa  and  mountain  tourism  are  most  prefer.  It  has  also  been  shown  that  women  prefer  Spa  tourism  the  most,  while  men  prefer  adventure  turism.  People  with  higher  education  level  more often decide to travel for medical reasons, while gastronomic (culinary) tourism is favourite for people with a lower level of education.</dim:field>
