                    <dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">Urban areas are the focus of tourist movements in the world nowadays. Urban tourism contributes to the development of urban areas. Urban centres are both the biggest users of resources and energy of rural areas and producers of waste and all forms of pollution. Since cities are complex systems, the concept of smart cities developed with the aim to contribute to the infrastructural arrangement of the city, a cleaner and more sustainable environment, and thus a better quality of life for citizens. The research aim is to indicate the importance of applying the smart cities concept to improve the competitiveness of urban tourism destinations. The research was conducted in the case of Copenhagen. A case method of analysis reveals influential factors that make smart cities concept-based urban areas tourism competitive. The research contributes to the improvement of urban areas tourism competitiveness and the smart city projects initiation. Smart sustainable city projects are highly recommended.</dim:field>
