                    <dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">Aim: Food intolerance an be the cause of many different health problems. It is known
that 5%-20% of humans have a food intolerance, but it stays unrecognized in many
cases because of nonspecific symptoms. Otherwise, moderate physical activity has a lot of
positive effects on immunity and people’s health generally. But very intensive training, as in
professional athletes, has a bad influence on immunity, such as increasing gastrointestinal
barrier (GI) permeability and leading to food intolerance. Many studies show the presence
of high sensitivity to food intolerance in professional athletes. It is apparent that extreme
physical activity is one of the risk factors. The aim of this study was to examine the influence
of a 3-month elimination diet on specific IgG antibodies level, GI discomfort intensity, body
composition, and sports performance of the athletes.
Methods: This was an experimental longitudinal study in the duration of 3 months.
32 professional athletes participated: 18 males (mean ± SD; mean age 25±7 years) and14
females (mean age 25±4 years). The participants were professional athletes, with training
more than 10 hours per week. They were chosen on results of The Allergy Questionnaire for
Athletes (AQUA) and Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS)questionnaires, and,
results of specific IgG food intolerance blood test. All athletes were on a 3-month elimination diet based on a particular specific IgG food intolerance blood test results. In addition
to the above questionnaires and specific IgG food intolerance blood test, basic medical examinations with sit and reach test of flexibility and cardiopulmonary testing were assessed
before and after the study.
Results: AQUA scores were significantly lowered (p = 0.001). There was a significant reduction in total GSRS score (p = 0.049) and indigestion syndrome score (p = 0.017). The level
of the specific IgG antibodies significantly decreased for all athletes and all foods they were
intolerant to. The fat percent (FAT%) decreased significantly (p= 0.001) without change in
weight (p= 0.13). Heart rate (HR) at the second (p= 0.03) and the third minute (p = 0.01) recovery phase was significantly lower. The flexibility of athletes significantly increased (p = 0.001).
Conclusions: The results indicate a positive effect of a 3-month elimination diet based on
IgG food intolerance blood test on GI discomfort, in terms of the significant decrease in its
intensity and a significant improvement in athletes’ body composition and sports performance.</dim:field>
