<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">Traditionally founded pension systems, which are based on public pension funds that function by the principle pay as you go, have been experiencing crisis for a long time now in almost all the countries in the world. In the contemporary conditions they have become unsustainable due to the demographic, economic and financial changes that are present in all countries. This kind of the situation in the pension systems in most countries brings about the increase of the transfer from the state budget for the payment of pensions, which becomes bigger and bigger financial burden for every country and disturbs its development. Concurrently, the social security of the citizens in the period after the end of the working period is being questioned. All mentioned changes and problems in the pension systems show the necessity for urgent reforms. The aim of this paper is to indicate the problems in functioning of pension systems and some possible ways of reforms, with the special attention to the reforms according to the multi pillar model, which is typical for Serbia.</dim:field>
