<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">Since the establishment of public pension systems to date, the environment in which they function has changed significantly. Changes are particularly evident in the demographic sphere, although there are changes in the economic, social and political spheres. These changes have influenced the development of public pension systems and pension policy of the last decades, and they have been affecting even today. Public pension systems have become unsustainable in modern conditions and more and more debates have begun on the need for privatizing pension insurance. However, a decision on this should not be made without analyzing the changes in these circumstances and the design of public pension systems. In themselves, these pension schemes are not unsustainable, they become so when the design of the pension system and pension policy do not match with the change of these circumstances, which are important determinants of their development. The aim of the paper is to highlight the importance of demographic trends for the long-term sustainability of public pension systems, as well as the factors influencing it.</dim:field>
