<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">The aim of this paper is to deepen our understanding of the relationships between industrial heritage and tourism, to illustrate in which way heritage drives touristic sustainable development, and to describe some of the problems that may arise, as well as to provide recommendations as to how the problems could be resolved. Also, the special aim is to provide a better understanding of the operations and needs in the field of using industrial heritage along the river coast in tourism. The paper will raise awareness about great significance and benefits of industrial cultural routes in the Balkan area. However, we will not be discussing the reuse and conversion of industrial buildings here, but rather the possibility that abandoned and lagging industrial areas — indeed entire regions — emphatically reclaim their original purpose, and, through “living history,” or “time travel,” become seats of science, education, culture, tourism, and ecology</dim:field>
