<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">Various human activities have led to irreversible loss of biodiversity, which is reflected in
the extinction of species and populations, ecosystem degradation and loss of ecological services,
erosion of genetic diversity and evolutionary potential. The Republic of Serbia is ranked among
the countries with a very high floristic diversity and high endemism. Within the overall biodiversity,
forest ecosystems occupy a significant place in Serbia, including about 250 indigenous tree
species. Conservation of forest genetic resources should be considered as the efforts to preserve
specific genotypes or populations and the combination of genes within them. The predominant
form of FGR conservation in Serbia is in situ, but different types of ex situ conservation are also
applied. In situ conservation of FGR in Serbia is mainly applied through the establishment of
seed stands, while ex situ is applied through seed orchards, progeny tests, and provenance trials,
and an important gene pool is kept in the arboreta and botanical gardens. The aim of this paper
was to give a review of the state of biological diversity and forest genetic resources in Serbia,
and activities on its conservation.</dim:field>
