                    <dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">The downstream end of the channel of a large river and parts of the floodplain constitute important natural resources. The construction industry relies on these resources, primarily sand and gravel of different grain sizes, such that excavation cannot and should not be discontinued. However, excessive and uncontrolled dredging of river channels and the riparian belt often has multiple adverse effects on the river regime (stability of riverbanks, bridges, levees, revetments and other hydraulic engineering structures), while heavy trucks damage or destroy roads. Soil devastation affects the native biocenosis and some ecologists even claim that in places the entire flora and fauna have become extinct. Abandoned excavation sites often turn into illegal waste dumps, which attract potentially disease-carrying rodents. They also serve as mosquito habitats that are difficult to eradicate. There is often abandoned machinery, as well as fuel, oil and other organic pollutants that easily reach the subsurface and affect groundwater quality. This potentially threatens existing water supply sources that rely on groundwater. The paper presents the current situation and potential consequences of uncontrolled sand and gravel extraction to public water supply, human health and the environment from a case study of the Velika Morava River.</dim:field>
