Jovanović B. Luković Chromite exploration in Serbia in 2015 included chromite occurrences on Mt. Jelica, which is situated in the metallogenic province of Šumadija. Chromite occurrences and deposits are broken up into small lenses and concentrated in the central part of Mt. Jelica. All the occurrences noted to date are located west of Mt. Rajac and the village of Premeća. Undoubtedly the largest occurrence between them is the so-called Premećki Šip in a creek of the same name near the village of Premeća. The total amount of chromite on this location could have been about 1000 tons according to Hissleitner; it was extracted back in 1928. There are identical occurrences of several smaller lenses of chromite west of a hill called Zlatno Brdo, in a mass of schistose serpentine. All mining operations ceased before World War II. South of Crna Stena, which is made up of diabases, there are several narrow deposits of serpentine. They, too, featured chromite at one time. The best known mines in the area were Borjak and Golo Brdo. Chromites of different characteristics are noted in the studied series of samples. Microscopic viewing identified varieties from massive, unaltered concentrations to subsequently silicified and altered varieties with relicts of leached former chromite grains and aggregates.
