imagery, an outcome of space exploration. As a result, enormous amounts of data are being made available by
programs such as Google Earth, SASPlanet, and MrSID. Satellite imagery is a valuable tool in the study of areal
topography, structure, and vegetation coverage, the identification of rock types and morphological features, etc.
The paper discusses how satellite imagery facilitates mapping of devastated areas, in particular landfills, open-pit
mines, and river and riverbank gravel excavation sites.</dim:field>
