                    <dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">River Drina is known by its specific greenish water, winding stream, river rafting, hydropowers,
history etc. On the other hand, relatively close to the banks of river Drina there are known mines
with low-temperature hydrothermal mineral association which carriers of antimony and arsenic,
as well as a number of objects of exploitation of gravel which causes morphological devastation
of the river flow and the river banks. Apart of that, in its lower course there are developed urban
areas as well as large areas of agriculture land. In those urban areas drainage systems of sewage
and wastewater are often not adequately established. Along the Drina river basin there is a large
number of illegal landfills that are often flooded in periods of high waters. Also, there are
industrial objects such smelter in Zajača and mine Veliki Majdan in Ljubovija.
Well known hydropower plants are &amp;quot;BAJINA BASTA&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;ZVORNIK&amp;quot;. Problem with this type
of hydropower plants is the fact that reservoirs (lakes) are continuously fed with sludge –
particles of different origin tiny-fractions. In this case two consequences 1. Rise – charging of
reservoirs and 2. Retention of pollutants in the precipitated material.
Various institutions follow this problem, with different purposes. During the work on study
“Degradation processes in the Drina flow and accumulations and the balancing of pollution”,
Faculty for applied ecology Futura designed a model for establishing a database of pollutants of
Drina River, using GIS methodology. The basic idea was to make space systematization of
pollutants with associated attributes. The objective was to use this as a starting point for
establishing detailed and applicable (in the future)database of pollutants in the basin of the Drina
River, which will greatly contribute to the monitoring and preserving of the natural environment
of our well-known and beautiful river.</dim:field>
