<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">There has been emerging a large number of evidence, for a long period of time that speaks in favor of the positive effect of physical activity on the prolongation of life expectancy by preserving and improving health. According to the WHO statistics, the top six most significant risk factors, directly or indirectly linked to two thirds of all deaths in the developed world, are functionally linked to physical activity. In addition to the already well-known prophylactic impact of exercising on cardiovascular disease, there is increasing evidence of inverse involvement in physical activity with the risks of initiation and the development of at least 10 malignant diseases.
The study of the nature of the relationship between initiation and the development of colorectal cancer and physical activity is hindered due to the difficulty in validating the assessment of the nature, intensity and volume of physical activity on large samples necessary for this type of research. Although significantly contaminated by non-specific factors influence, available data on physical activity and colorectal carcinoma links indicate a strong and consistent inverse relationship with the illness risk, attempted to be explained by the operation of several independent physiological and biochemical mechanisms.
Available research results indicate a likely non-linear relationship between the degree of physical activity and positive effects on the prevention of malignancies, which justifies the WHO recommendations with respect to the minimum level of engagement and confirms that higher intensity and volume of the physical efforts yields additional benefits. Although the benefits of physical activity are reduced in extreme exercise (over 3.5 hours of intensive activity daily, every day of the week), the level of risk affecting the sedentary individuals still cannot be reached.</dim:field>
