<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">Issues related to energy production and consumption are increasingly relevant for the overall economic development and social wellbeing. There is an almost linear correlation between energy consumption and economy growth. On the other hand, increased energy consumption is having detrimental effect on the environment including the presumed influence on the climate change. Political aspects of the energy resources should not be neglected too, minority of the countries owe majority of the non-renewable energy resources. But the most worrying aspect of the energy consumption is very simple: there is not enough energy resources that are sufficient to satisfy the needs and aspiration of the growing global population. This paper summarizes in quantitative terms key issues related to the global energy consumption and available energy sources, aiming to raise awareness on the looming problems related to the sustainable development.</dim:field>
