<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">Mistakes are common part of every sport, but their influence on athletes’ success is greater in sports with the exceptionally high rate of cognitive skills and decision-making process in competitor’s result. Knowing this, it is important to recognize mistakes of every orienteer, in order to undertake appropriate measures for their complete elimination, or minimization. Bearing in mind results of previous researches, which show that female athletes, compared to male athletes, experience larger number of competitive situations as stressful (Bačanac et al., 2004), and that, before the competition, their level of cognitive anxiety is higher (Juhas et al., 2012), we assumed that female athletes will also significantly differ by type of mistakes during the competition. Comparative analysis of mistakes made by orienteers of different gender was made on basis of survey over 130 participants of competition “Kopaonik Open 2013” (N=79 male, and N=51 female) within research on most common mistakes in orienteering and their causes (Kozoderović, 2013). Results of one way ANOVA analysis revealed that the profiles which include 14 typical mistakes are statistically significantly differ by the incidence of mistakes „too fast running which doesn’t provide a good map reading“ and „parallel error“ or similar terrain error. The mistake „parallel error“ or similar terrain error is significantly more frequently made by female athletes (F=7.26; p=.008), while the „too fast running that does not provide a good map reading“ is a typical mistake of male athletes (F=22.94; p=.000). It is also observed that female athletes take the wrong map at the start more often (F=6.64; p=.060), which indirectly indicates them to be more excited, anxhious and deconcetrated at the start of the race, than the male orienteers. The results show the differences in typical mistakes of orienteers of different gender, which are very important to be recognized in the training process. The obtained results could be particularly useful to trainers working with youths, where the mistakes are more common, and the mechanisms for their overcoming insufficient.</dim:field>
