<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract">In order to understand second language learning it is of outmost importance to distinguish between implicit and explicit learning mechanisms and the role they play in second language acquisition. It is best to approach this problem from both the practical and the theoretical point of view. In everyday life one of the most frequently asked questions is whether grammar should be taught explicitly, while the psycholinguists constantly wonder whether adults can learn language fullythrough the same implicit learning mechanisms which they used as children while acquiring a first language. This confirms the fact that implicit/explicit dichotomy has always been hard to define; therefore the authors of this article will give a review ofhow implicit and explicit learning have been defined and studied in cognitive psychology, referring to the field of second language learning. The paper will give the short review of Second Language Acquisition literature on implicit and explicit learning itself and discuss the different roles of two learning mechanisms.</dim:field>
