importance, are defined in the generic standards of the New Approach directives. For radio and
telecommunication terminal equipment there is still no general standard which defines the principles for the
design of this equipment with an emphasis on assessment and risk reduction. Based on the new standards for risk assessment in the field of machinery, EN ISO 12100, a procedure for risk assessment is proposed in this paper for products which do not fulfill essential requirements of the RTTE Directive. In addition, the paper presents the application of the methodology for the risk assessment in the use of mobile phones, which is taken as a typicalrepresentative of radio and telecommunications terminal equipment. Based on the defined methodology, thepaper presents the results of risk assessments that may arise in the use of mobile phones by children.
